Statement: Abstraction is a means for me to perceive biology and nature. I paint conversations that are developed from a linear language of handmade lines that slowly grow into varying hue intensities. In these spaces, organic form takes gain and sets out to transform beyond awe of natural phenomenon and toward a place of inquiry, oddity, and sensuality.
Color plays a vital role in encouraging viewer’s minds into other trains of thought. The function of color in both the natural and material worlds are of much inspiration to me. I play with ideas of design in ways of asserting and communicating. Toying with formal rules is a way for me to think about the histories of abstraction and create tensions between flatness and depth.

When he’s not fixing motorcycles he doesn’t know how to ride, or corrupting impressionable young minds at Middlebury College with thoughts of following their artistic dreams, Sanford Mirling occupies his time with the making of uncomfortably familiar objects and installations that tap into the absurdities of our traditional gender roles, and participating in frenetic energy of the Collar Works board of directors- a non-profit art-space Sanford co-founded in Troy, NY.
